Spotlight on Gregory McManus, Manufacturing 2000 Graduate Gregory McManus started his career in auto body mechanics though his local Career and Technical Education Center. After high school, he enrolled in the MANUFACTURING 2000 program offered by New Century Careers, where he learned the fundamentals of becoming a machinist. He started as an apprentice and is now a full-fledged journeyman machinist. Filling the Manufacturing Workforce Pipeline The manufacturing workforce is aging and the supply of skilled workers is in decline. In fact, manufacturing has experienced a nearly 40 percent growth in demand for highly skilled workers, while demand for low skilled workers continues to decline. This article explores the manufacturing crisis and the role New Century Careers and the Pittsburgh Chapter NTMA have played in assisting local manufacturers to fill their pipeline. Higlights of the 33rd Annual National NTMA Apprentice Competition For three days, thirteen regional champions from eight states competed in the "Super Bowl of Precision Machining" testing their knowledge and ability in lathe, mill, precision grinding and, for the first-time, CNC machining. SURVEY: Region's Manufacturer's In Need of Workers Manufacturing has taken its licks in Pittsburgh but still remains a source of well-paying, middle-class jobs, particularly for those willing to learn skills in areas such as machining and welding, a new study concludes. There are an estimated 2,560 job openings at manufacturing companies in southwestern Pennsylvania, according to a new survey of employers conducted by Duquesne University's Center for Competitive Workforce Development and New Century Careers , a nonprofit training organization. Contest of Skills Call it Pittsburgh's version of "The Apprentice". For the first time in close to 30 years, Pittsburgh is playing host to a national competition that will test the skills of manufacturing apprentices. The competition is part of an ongoing local and national effort to develop a badly needed skilled manufacturing workforce.
